Is Social Media a Fad?

While I was out in the Twitterverse, I came across a youtube video that was very powerful.  It basically starts out with the question “Is social media a fad?”; from there, it goes to illustrate how social media has taken over the cyber world and is revolutionizing the way we think about everything, including business.  It is no coincidence that the creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, is the youngest billionaire in the world.

Social media isn’t just a fad, it’s a shift in the way we communicate.  If you and your company haven’t entered into social media somehow, you’re missing the boat.  There are many ways to get your foot in the door, and it doesn’t have to be just Facebook, Twitter, & LinkedIn.  Start creating videos, start a blog, use other avenues to get your word out with things such as StumbleUpon, Reddit, Groupon, LivingSocial, or flikr.  I predict that within five years, not being involved with basic social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube will be an equivalent faux pas as to not having a website or being involved with the “internet” today.
