PRC 3D Format
This is an interesting development from Adobe on the CAD to CAD front. This is a real game changer in the online CAD model catalog business. The ability to export STEP or IGES files from 3D embedded in a PDF without the need for a separate CAD-to-CAD model service will be huge for many companies on the marketing front. For marketing departments, being able to launch a product with this vehicle is a tremendous value-add. Not only can you position and brand in one document, but even offer a configuration of the product for the design engineer to view, download and evaluate in most native CAD packages. Although mentioned here as a great collaborative tool for manufacturing, marketers take notice.
“One of the most compelling new features in Acrobat 3D 8 is the portable PRC format. This is the magic that allows for large assemblies, high compression that stores exact geometry, and the tolerances necessary for export to STEP or IGES for manufacturing. Specifically it enables:
- assemblies and parts
- tree of 3D entities : coordinate systems, wireframe, surfaces and solids,
- exact geometry representation
- tessellated (triangulated) representation
- markup
- regular compression : enables to represent DIRECTLY CAD data without loss or transformation from the originating CAD system.
- high compression : enables to store very small files, which are at a given physical tolerance from the originating shape. Tolerance is typically 0.001 mm for exact geometry and 0.01 mm for tessellation.
