Aiming Higher continued
Just a quick note on my recent editorial insights column from the October issue. I’ve received a few comments for my lack of high school basketball career, but I wanted to point out a few of my post high school career highlights.
In 1989, I played on the All Campus winning intramural team at Bowling Green State University. Remembering the moments like yesterday, I sank 1 of 2 foul shots with 4 seconds on the clock to win 50-49 against the Delta Tau’s – we were an independent team playing the fraternity champions.
Last year, marked one of life’s biggest accomplishments as I was inducted into the West Park YMCA, Cleveland, Ohio basketball Hall of Fame. Prior to moving to California, I played in the rec league for virtually every season since the league launched. Our team’s record still stands for winning the championship 10 consecutive seasons in a row – (usually a year had 2-3 seasons). It wasn’t until Bobby Sura of the Cleveland Cavaliers entered the league (during his off season) did my single game scoring record get beat – Sura scored over 100 points to surpass my mark of 70 some. While our players regularly changed, we had a great team chemistry and the ability to share the ball.
I realize this is useless information for our marketing blog, but hopefully some great entertainment regarding my hoop days and since someone asked, I figured this was probably on everyone’s mind, but most were afraid to ask – just kidding.
There is a common thread between playing on a winning basketball team and being part of a successful media team. I’ve been asked…what do you attribute your 1st year success to? Well, we are doing well because our team is working together moving towards a common goal and everyones is aligned. Design World works because Terri (art/production) works well with John/Leslie/Larry/Kathryn, who all share and collaborate together on ideas and editorial direction. Meanwhile, Marshall/Dave are working with Terri, and the editors to support the online content while building cool tools based on today’s technologies. Lastly, we have a dedicated sales team with Mike, Jim, Kristin, and Todd telling our story in the market. Collectively, we are all working together with a common goal and as a result, we are not only having fun, but also gaining ground and marketplace acceptance.
So, whether its on a basketball team or media team, gotta play together to win. And we are doing just that.
WTWH, Scott
